The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was his second album and his only album released this year. Yet he had enough outtakes from it to release a second album this year. The album had an original tracklist that got aborted. One of these was a song called Talkin' John Birch Blues. The talking blues was a form of blues that featured talking over music instead of singing and was popularized by Woody Guthrie. Bob Dylan was invited to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show and wanted to play the song. The network wouldn't let him and wanted him to play a different song, but he refused and walked off the stage. This controversy caused the label to not include the song on the album. So because of this, he would record a new song a year later to the day called Talkin' World War III Blues. Though he had another talking blues song that I used on this one. Most of these songs would later get released on the Bootleg Series Volume 1.

The Beatles - Second Album (1963)

Side A:
1. I Want to Hold Your Hand
2. From Me to You
3. Thank You Girl
4. She Loves You
5. I'll Get You
6. Ask Me Why
7. This Boy

Side B:
8. Boys
9. Twist and Shout
10. Please Mr. Postman
11. Roll Over Beethoven
12. You Really Got a Hold on Me
13. Devil in Her Heart
14. Money (That's What I Want)

As mentioned in my last post, when The Beatles released two albums in 1963, they were both half covers and half originals, meaning you could combine all the originals on one album and all the covers on another. But as the Past Masters compilations showed us, they had a few more originals around this time. So the first side has all the originals from Past Masters plus one from Please Please Me I didn't use before, and the second side has the most rocking of the covers.

15. Not a Second Time

For as long as this blog had preferred American versions of British releases, the Beatles' British albums have been considered mostly canon with the exception of one album. But basically the premise is this: if the Beatles released two albums in 1963 with both being half covers and half originals, then why not just combine all the original tracks together? Although the album is called Meet the Beatles! and combines tracks from both albums, this is a take on my original idea.
